Mile Marker 61

I promised myself I would ride long and far for my birthday. Still standing at the end of the ride ... Still not proud of that stomach.

Three guys with thighs out to the next county glided silently past Steven as he pedaled uphill. The calves of the fourth rider were ropes of muscle as he vanished around a broad sweeping left-hand curve.

It’s days like this on the bike that Steven knows he is never ever going to set a land-speed record.

Just a personal best.

On Tuesday, Steven will be 61. Today, he rode 30+ miles on the bike.

Promises made. Promises kept.

Do not go gentle into that good night — Dylan Thomas.
